WALNUT, CA--- The California Baptist University wrestling team continued BIG 12 action on Sunday afternoon as they battled #16/21 West Virginia at the third annual Mt. SAC Dual in collaboration with Titan Mercury Wrestling Club and Beat the Street LA.
The Lancers would claim three match wins over the Mountaineers but would ultimately fall 29-10 in the dual.
The dual began at 125 pounds, as the Mountaineers would start the dual with bonus points, earning a technical fall from #9 Jett Strickenberger, the reigning Big 12 Champion at 125 pounds. WVU would make it back-to-back match wins as they would win by decision in the bout between #29 Remy Murillo and #16 Gunner Aldrick. Murillo would surrender some early points but would battle his way back to make the bout 9-7 in favor of Aldrick with seconds remaining. Murillo would nearly pull off the upset as he would seemingly get control of Aldrick's legs near the edge of the mat; however, an official review would confirm the clock ran out before the takedown, and Aldrick would escape with the 9-7 decision.
The Lancers would get on the board at 141lbs as Jesse Vasquez would take on 3x NCAA qualifier Jordan Titus. Vasquez would strike first with an early takedown and then would secure the match with another takedown in the third period to put three points on the board with an 8-3 decision over Titus. Paul Kelly would continue the Lancer momentum at 149 pounds as he defeated TJ Langley. Kelly's second-period reversal would be the difference, as he would display phenomenal tactical wrestling and a strong ride out for the 2-1 decision over Langley.
At 157lbs, West Virginia would wrestle 2025 All-American #2 Ty Watters to face off with #33 Drayden Morton. Morton would hang tough with one of the best pound-for-pound wrestlers in the country, but a couple of takedowns from Watters in the match would give him the 7-1 decision win and three points for WVU. The Mountaineers would get bonus points in three of the next four matches to distance themselves from the Lancers at 29-6.
The Lancers would finish off the dual with a win at heavyweight as Tristan Kemp would secure bonus points via a major decision, 8-0 over Brock Kehler. Kemp secured two takedowns in the bout and was excellent on top during the match. The win brought the final score to 29-10 in favor of the Mountaineers.
