CBU Earns Five Match Wins in a Down-to-the-Wire Dual at Air Force on Sunday

COLORADO SPRINGS, CO--- The California Baptist University wrestling team finalized its BIG 12 wrestling schedule on Sunday afternoon as they battled Air Force on the road in a down-to-the-wire dual in Colorado Springs.
Both squads won five matches in the dual, but the Falcons won the final match to secure a 19-16 victory over the Lancers.
The dual began at 125lbs, as Tucker Owens of Air Force helped the Falcons strike first with an 11-1 major decision over Cooper Shore. Remy Murillo would get CBU on the board at 133lbs despite falling behind 4-1 in the opening period. Murillo would score two quick takedowns in the second period and then would secure the match in the third period, 12-7, for a decision win.
The Falcons would get right back in the win column with Carter Nogle besting Jesse Vasquez in a 10-1 major decision. CBU would win four straight matches beginning at 149lbs with Paul Kelly starting off the run with a 4-0 decision over Blake Shelton. Drayden Morton would secure the decision at 157lbs with an early second-period reversal to win the bout 5-4. Gabe Schumm would earn bonus points at 165lbs with three takedowns and two nearfall points over Logan Fowler for the 13-3 major decision. Timothy Cowan would end the scoring run for CBU with a sudden victory win over Mike Avelar to bring the team score to 16-8 in favor of the Lancers.
Air Force would secure another set of bonus points at 184lbs with a technical fall from Brian Burburija before #31 Karson Tompkins would bring the match at 16 apiece with a decision over Eli Sheeren at 197lbs. With the team score tied, the dual would come down to heavyweight as Tristan Kemp battled Rylan Kuhn. Kuhn struck first with a takedown in the first period to lead 3-1 heading into the second period. Kemp and Kuhn would exchange escapes in the ensuing periods, but Kuhn would come away with the 4-2 decision to secure the dual for Air Force 19-16.
