RIVERSIDE --- The conference season rolls on this week as the California Baptist men's basketball program welcomes two teams to the Dale E. and Sarah Ann Fowler Events Center. With a streak of 14 consecutive wins in Riverside on the line, seeding for the conference tournament is heating up as Tarleton State and Abilene Christian make visits to California.
CBU is riding a six-game win streak that has them in a three-way tie for first place in the WAC along with UT Arlington and Utah Valley. The Lancers were victorious in their lone game last week, an overtime victory in Texas against UTA.
Guard Dominique Daniels Jr. scored 28 points in the win, 13 coming in overtime, as he was named the WAC Player of the Week for the second week in a row. The honors continued for the graduate guard as he was named the United States Basketball Writers Association (USBWA) Mid-Major Player of the Month for January.
Daniels Jr. is the first player in program history to receive the USBWA award. He earned it after averaging over 25 PPG in the month, highlighted by a record 47-point performance against Utah Valley on January 24.
CBU's first test of the week will be Tarleton State, a team the Lancers lost in overtime against back on January 3. Daniels Jr. led the Lancers with 25 points in the loss, followed by a 12-point outing from Rene D'Amelio. D'Amelio and Bradey Henige led CBU with eight rebounds each as CBU dominated the glass with 37 boards to 23 for the Texans.
Things have taken a 180-degree turn since that early January meeting. CBU is 6-0 since last playing the Texans, while Tarleton is 0-6.
The Lancers will play their second game of the week on Saturday when Abilene Christian comes to Riverside. CBU beat ACU, 74-58, during their January 15 meeting in Texas. Martel Williams had a career day of 23 points to pace the Lancers. Daniels Jr. and Jayden Jackson both dropped ten.
ACU enters the week 2-6 in WAC play and will be in action on Thursday against Utah Valley in Orem. Tarleton State is 2-7 in conference action.
Thursday's meeting with Tarleton State is slated for 7 p.m. inside the Fowler Events Center. Saturday will start at 5 p.m. Tickets for all remaining home games are on sale HERE.
