First Half Scoring Lifts CBU to Third Straight Shutout Win

RIVERSIDE --- A sunny Sunday afternoon was the setting for the Lancers' final home non-conference match of the 2026 season, as California Baptist welcomed Pacific to the CBU Soccer Stadium. Opening half goals from Drew Hardin and Andrew Lovell were all the Lancers needed, as CBU claimed another shutout victory.

Sunday's win improves the Lancers record to 5-2-0. All five of CBU's victories have been shutouts.

"As we build momentum, we don't want to lose sight of the things we can do better," noted head coach Coe Michaelson. "But we are happy to have another clean sheet and another win. Ulrik had one big time save, and I thought Felix (Ezekwuka) was particularly dangerous today as he created both goals. But it was also great to reintroduce (William Lawson) and (Uly Martinez). Those are two elite players, and we will only continue to improve."

After a positional battle to start the season, goalkeeper Ulrik Stroem recorded his third consecutive start and finished with his fourth straight shutout. Stroem, the reigning Pac-12 Newcomer of the Week, racked up three saves to match his season high.

It took less than 14 minutes for the Lancers to find the back of the net. CBU's opening goal came courtesy of Hardin, who banked it in on his first touch from six yards out. The pass was sent into the penalty area from Felix Ezekwuka, who was set up by Adam Marsli.

Both were credited with assists.

Ezekwuka set up the Lancers' second goal, as well, as CBU doubled its lead in the 42nd minute. Ezekwuka fired an attempt on frame that was saved by Pacific goalkeeper Mateus Ruiz-Hurst, but the deflection went directly to the foot of Andrew Lovell, who, like Hardin, scored off his first touch near the six-yard box.

Hardin's goal was his first of the season and his first since October 4, 2025. Lovell's goal was also his first of the year and his first since October 31, 2024.

The Lancers finished Sunday's winning performance with 14 shots to just four by the Tigers. Six of CBU's attempts finished on frame. The Lancers also controlled possession at 54 percent.

Sunday was also highlighted by two returns, and a collegiate debut. Senior Uly Martinez made his season debut after missing the first six matches with a knee injury. William Lawson also made his return to the field, playing for the first time since an injury vs. San Diego (September 5). Second-year player Mathi Cabrera also saw time, as Cabrera made his collegiate debut with 13 minutes of action in the second half.

The visit from Pacific marked the lone date of a one-match homestand, as the Lancers will return to the road this week. Up next is the longest road trip of the regular season, as CBU will play the next three away from Riverside. The trip begins on Thursday, September 24, with a visit to UC Irvine to close out the non-conference schedule.

CBU will open its inaugural Pac-12 season on October 1 when they visit Gonzaga. The Lancers return to the CBU Soccer Stadium on October 7 to host Oregon State.
