Late Goal Extends CBU’s Win Streak to Four

IRVINE, CA --- California Baptist visited UC Irvine on Thursday night in the final non-conference contest before the start of the Lancers' first Pac-12 season. A late ball in the box led to the night's only goal, as CBU took down the Anteaters, 1-0, extending the Lancers' win streak to four.
All four of the Lancers' victories on this streak have been shutouts. The Lancers, now 6-2-0, have produced a clean sheet in each winning effort this season.
"Really pleased with the win today," said head coach Coe Michaelson. "As the momentum built for us through the second half, I knew we had a chance to win it late.
With the match scoreless over 80 minutes into action, CBU put forth its best effort at a go-ahead goal by whipping crosses into the penalty area. Freshman Haruna Lukwago played a beautiful ball near the goal, but the Anteaters were able to thwart the chance without a CBU shot. The Lancers recovered possession, setting up another chance in a matter of seconds.
Senior Drew Hardin collected the ball in the middle of the pitch and subsequently played it outside to Lukwago. The Ugandan sent another ball into the penalty area, this time clearing the back line where junior Blake D'Agostino was in perfect position to head the ball over the goal line.
D'Agostino's goal, registering in the 82nd minute, was his fifth of the season. The junior striker has produced a point in five of the Lancers' six wins.
Lukwago's assist was the first of his collegiate career.
"What a great cross from Haruna and header from Blake," added Michaelson. "I felt today was a very mature performance from us, a real step forward in our evolution as a team."
Freshman Ulrik Stroem, the two-time reigning Pac-12 Newcomer of the Week, totaled a pair of saves in his fifth consecutive shutout. Stroem has 13 saves to just three goals allowed this year.
The Lancers produced three attempts on frame, two being saved by UCI goalkeeper Scott Williams. CBU closed the win with eight shots to five by the Anteaters. UC Irvine outpossessed the Lancers, 56-44.
Thursday night marked the Lancers' final match before kicking off their first Pac-12 season. CBU will open the conference slate next week with a visit to Spokane and Gonzaga University. Wednesday's match with the Bulldogs is scheduled for 7 p.m. and will air on the Pac-12's YouTube channel.
The Lancers will add a road match in San Luis Obispo after their visit to Spokane before returning to Riverside on October 7 to host Oregon State.
