#21 WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL ROUTS POINT LOMA, 3-0

RIVERSIDE, Calif. (Tuesday, Sept. 21, 2004) – The #21 California Baptist University women’s volleyball team ended a nine-match losing streak to Point Loma Nazarene in fine fashion on Tuesday night, routing the Sea Lions, 30-20, 30-20, 30-21, in a Golden State Athletic Conference contest at Van Dyne Gymnasium.
CBU (11-2 overall, 3-2 GSAC) hadn’t beaten Point Loma (7-8, 1-4) since the 1999 season. But the Lancers hit .203 (50-26-118) compared to the Sea Lions’ negative-.009 (19-20-108) tonight.
Junior outside hitter Yajaira Prado (Montecristi, Dominican Republic) was the only player on either side to reach double-figure kills with 17. Prado also had 14 digs. Junior libero Linsey Smolskis (Cerritos, CA/Cerritos HS) chipped in with a match-high 17 digs. Senior middle blocker Crystal Prehn (Huntington Beach, CA/La Serna HS/Irvine Valley CC) added eight kills and five blocks.
The Sea Lions were led by junior outside hitter Kate Alderson’s eight kills.
The Lancers had 11 service aces to the Sea Lions’ one, and also held a 7-4 blocking advantage.
“On defense, you’ve got to block it or dig it, and we did that very well tonight,” CBU Coach Ryan McGuyre said. “With a team like Point Loma, if you keep their hitting percentage in the negative, you know you’ve done a good job. If the defense can keep improving and we keep working on our sideout play, we’ll be in good shape.”
Game one was tied, 6-6, but the Lancers ran off six straight points, two on kills by freshman outside hitter Yudelka Bonilla (Mao, Valverde, Dominican Republic). CBU then built its lead up to double-digits at 20-10, and eventually as large as 12 points. Prado had five kills and Smolskis had three service aces in game one.
CBU held a 14-13 lead in game two, then scored five straight points, two coming on Prado kills. The lead grew from 19-13 to 22-14 to 25-15. Prado had another five kills for CBU in game two. Point Loma had six kills and nine hitting errors in the game.
Game three was more of the same, as CBU went from an 11-10 lead to 18-10 as Bonilla had two service aces and Prado had two kills. The Lancers’ lead grew to double-digits at 24-14. The Lancers had 17 kills (seven by Prado) to the Sea Lions’ five (against seven hitting errors) in game three.
CBU is next at Christian Heritage on Saturday (Sept. 25) at 7 p.m.
