CBU BASEBALL ENDS REGULAR SEASON ON SOUR NOTE, IN 14-6 LOSS TO CONCORDIA IN GSAC ACTION
IRVINE, Calif. (Friday, May 6, 2005) – Concordia picked up four runs in a sloppy first inning from the California Baptist University baseball team, and posted another four-run inning and a five-run frame to beat the Lancers by a score of 14-6 in the final game of the Golden State Athletic Conference regular season in Irvine Friday afternoon.
CBU (24-23-1, 18-12 GSAC) ended the season 2-4 versus the Eagles (20-23, 16-13 GSAC), who capitalized on three CBU errors and seven walks from Lancer pitching. CBU also had its chances to score, but stranded 12 runners on the afternoon.
Concordia 3B Charlie Douglas had three hits, including a double and homer, scored three times, and knocked in three runs to lead the Eagles at the plate. Right-fielder Daniel Robertson had a two-run single and an RBI triple for three RBI from the leadoff spot, while SS Andrew James had a two-run double in the first inning and ended the day with four hits.
Junior CF Mike Swain (San Clemente, CA/San Clemente HS/Irvine Valley CC) had two hits, including a double, while senior DH Chris Walters (Riverside, CA/Notre Dame HS) had a pair of hits, scored a run, and posted an RBI. Senior C Joey Hendricks (Covina, CA/Charter Oak HS/Concordia Univ.) doubled in a run, and senior 2B Jon Chastine (Moreno Valley, CA/Notre Dame HS) had a single and knocked in two runs.
Marty Flores (1-1) earned the win in relief for the Eagles. He allowed one unearned run on three hits in 2 2/3 innings. Junior RHP Cory Wells (Riverside, CA/Woodcrest Christian HS) took the loss for CBU after giving up six runs (one earned) on three hits and five walks in 2 1/3 frames to drop his record to 0-2.
The Lancers will next travel to La Mirada Tues.-Thurs. (May 10-12) for the 2005 GSAC Tournament. Host Biola is the #1 seed, and Point Loma Nazarene is #2, while CBU and Concordia are #3 and #4, respectively.
