OREM, UT--- The California Baptist University baseball team continued its winning ways on Sunday afternoon, pulling off the sweep of Utah Valley in a 2-1 pitcher's duel in Orem.
The win was a major milestone for Head Coach Gary Adcock, as the victory secured his 800th win as the skipper of the CBU Baseball program in his 23rd season. Adcock now has the Lancers atop the Western Athletic Conference Standings at 10-5, with Tarleton State sitting at 10-4. CBU is now 37-11 overall and will have one more conference series to play this upcoming weekend.
The Lancers got on the board early as they have in all series, capitalizing on a wild pitch that scored Cole Hansen, who doubled earlier. Bryce McFeely would single on the next at bat to set up some more scoring possibilities, but a UVU double play would end the inning.
A pitchers' duel between Ryne Palmer and UVU's Maddax Peck would break out over the next several innings as the defenses of both squads made several phenomenal plays in the field and on the mound to keep the game a low-scoring affair. Palmer got in a little trouble at the bottom of the third inning as he would face loaded bases after three walks. Palmer would shake off the mistakes with two straight strikeouts to end the inning and strand the three Wolverines base runners.
UVU would finally get on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth after an RBI triple, but the damage would be limited to just the single run after the Lancers' defense would earn the final out in foul territory from Cole Howarth. The tie was short-lived as the Lancers would retake the lead at the top of the fifth inning after a double from Chris Ramirez scored Matt Chaves, who had advanced to second on a throwing error from UVU. Ramirez ultimately would be called out after losing his balance on the second base bag and would be tagged out. The Wolverines limited the damage to the Chavez run after a flyout at centerfield from McFeely.
CBU got in a little more trouble in the fifth as the bases were once again loaded for UVU following an error and a pair of walks. Gary Adcock turned to his bullpen in the fifth for some matchup pitching with Cameron Teper, John Carlson, and Niko Urquidi all getting some work on the mound. Teper did his job with a strikeout of Jacob Carpenter, and Urquidi would finish the job by forcing a fielder's choice to end the inning and strand three more UVU base runners. The rest of the game was relatively quiet as CBU's and UVU's pitching staffs would retire the opposition in order in the seventh and eighth innings. Zachary Yates would finish off the Wolverines in the ninth with back-to-back strikeouts to secure the sweep at UCCU Ballpark.
The pitching staff struck out nine total batters on the afternoon, led by Palmer with four. Teper would be credited with the victory with his lone strikeout of Carpenter in the fifth inning. Hansen led the offense with two hits, while Ramirez had the lone RBI of the afternoon.
The Lancers will be back in action for their penultimate midweek game against CSUN on Tuesday, May 5, in Northridge, California.
