Saturday's win inches the Lancers one game closer to a milestone, as it gives coach Gary Adcock 799 wins for his head coaching career. Saturday's win also clinched a spot in the WAC Tournament later this month in Arizona.
Ramirez did a perfect job of setting the table for the Lancers, as he followed up a two-home run showing on Friday with a 6-for-6 day at the dish on Saturday. Ramirez blasted his third homer of the series and added two doubles, as he finished a triple shy of the cycle for the second day in a row.
The sophomore shortstop is 10-for-12 so far this series.
CBU posted their first two runs of the game in the top of the first when Cole Hansen hit his seventh homer of the season, and CBU's fifth of the series. A Cole Howarth sac fly and a Bryce McFeely RBI single added to the scoring in the second and third, giving CBU a 4-1 advantage.
UVU answered in the last of the third with a three-spot to tie the game but back came the Lancers with three of their own in the fourth. Eric Ruiz singled in a run, and then Ramirez added an RBI single of his own. McFeely closed the inning with a sac fly.
The Lancers scored in eight consecutive innings on Saturday, posting multiple runs in four of the eight frames. Utah Valley held the Lancers scoreless in just the ninth inning.
CBU one-upped their four-homer day on Friday with five long balls on Saturday. Connor Ross hit a mammoth shot in the fifth, and then in the sixth, CBU hit back-to-back long balls courtesy of Ruiz and Ramirez. Ross added his second home run of the day in the top of the eighth to close out the scoring barrage.
Bryan Peck improved his record to 6-1 thanks to 5.1 innings of work. Cameron Teper was first in relief, recording four outs before Luis Becerra tossed the final 2.1 in relief.
The Lancers will bring out the brooms on Sunday in the hope of a series sweep. The finale is scheduled for 11:05 a.m. (PST).
CBU will be back at Totman Stadium next weekend for the final three home games of the regular season. Sacramento State will make its visit to Riverside, as the Lancers continue to battle for the top spot in the conference standings. The Lancers are currently a game out of first place behind Tarleton State.
Next week's series will close with Senior Day on Mother's Day.
