IRVINE, Calif. --- Concordia defended its No. 3 ranking with the help of a solid night from Traci Weamer, in a, 30-23-30-23, 30-22, sweep of No. 4-ranked and 2-time defending NAIA champion California Baptist Tuesday night.
The Eagles (22-3, 14-3) avenged a 4-game loss in Riverside earlier in the season as they improve their winning streak to 3 with just a trio of dates remaining on the regular-season schedule.
Meanwhile, the Lancers, who were playing without the duo of this week's GSAC Player of the Week Verania Willis and Angela Willis, who is fifth in the conference with 0.91 blocks per game, fall to 24-6, 14-4. Verania and Angela Willis are both currently competing for Costa Rica in the World Volleyball Championships, held in Japan.
The Lancers pulled to within 2, at 15-13, following a Yudelka Bonilla kill in game one, but Concordia took 7 of the next 10 points to bulk up its lead to 22-16 on a kill from Lindsey Campbell. Weamer then posted a kill to make the score 27-22, and then served 2 consecutive points, including a service ace, to set up the, 30-23, win in the opening set.
The Eagles piled up an early, 10-4, lead in the second set, but California Baptist quickly answered with a 7-1 rally to bring the game within just one point, at 11-10. Concordia took off from there, however, as Weamer posted a pair of kills an an assist in the Eagles' next 5 points that made the score 16-12.
Concordia continued to carry the momentum throughout the game, holding the Lancers at arm's legnth as they outhit the visitors by a margin of .341 (18-4-41) to .238 (15-5-42) in the game-2 win.
Stephanie Scheele and Bailey Schade paired up for a block and Weamer followed with a kill to put California Baptist down by a tally of 20-13 in the third set, as Concordia held the Lancers to a .156 (13-6-45) hitting clip in the win.
Shi Fei finished with 14 kills against a pair of hitting errors on 38 attempts to lead California Baptist, as Bonilla and Natasha Evylnn posted 12 and 11 kills, respectively.
