RIVERSIDE, Calif. --- Near the end of a grueling stretch where it plays 5 games in 8 days, including 4 of the past 5, California Baptist looked like a team that could use a rest Friday, in its, 0-2, loss to Cal Poly Pomona.
In a game that saw just 4 shots on goal, the Lancers made up the difference with a decisive own-goal, and the Broncos put up an insurance tally when Rigo Cardenas tucked away a goal in the 89th minute to make the final score 2-0.
California Baptist has lost 4-straight after taking the season opener last Tuesday, dropping its season record to 1-4. Meanwhile, Cal Poly Pomona improves to 2-1.
The Broncos scored what proved to be the game-winner in the 31st minute, when Peter Hadzovac sent a pass across the goal mouth that was deflected in by California Baptist's defense.
The Lancers had their best chance to score in the 58th minute, when Spenser Steele ripped a bullet from just 12 yards out on the right side, but Cal Poly keeper Ryan Thomas made an outstanding one-handed save to hold California Baptist scoreless. Steele's shot was the only attempt that was on-target for the Lancers.
Cardenas found himself with just the keeper to beat after Charles Varga set him up about 10 yards out from the goal, and he found the net on his lone shot of the game.
In all, the Lancers out-shot Cal Poly, 10-9, and drew 3 fewer fouls than the Broncos, at 14-11. The Lancers also picked up 3 yellow cards (Fashinu-Ron Nesbeth, Kevin Watson and Jose Solis) in the loss, while the Broncos were shown 2 cards.
