AZUSA, Calif. --- The NAIA's No. 2-ranked Azusa Pacific scored two second half goals to key its way to a 3-0 GSAC win over California Baptist Saturday afternoon.
The loss drops the Lancers to 6-4-1 overall, 2-2-0 (6 points) GSAC. Meanwhile, the win keeps the two-time NAIA runners-up undefeated at 11-0, 4-0 (12 points).
The Cougars out-shot the Lancers, 16-9, including a 9-2 margin on goal. Steven Lenhart, the GSAC's leading scorer, got things started in the 36th minute. He collected a cross from Brandon Stirm, and his header was blocked by a Lancer defender. However, the block went right back to Lenhart, and he promptly tucked away the game's first goal.
That was more than enough for one of the top defensive units in the GSAC, which has given up just four goals in 11 games.
Azusa Pacific doubled its lead in the 59th minute with a quick strike. After being whistled for offside, the Cougars intercepted the Lancers' long restart near midfield. Sven Simon sent a long ball down the left sideline. Ryan Cheek one-timed a cross to Dana Yoshizu, who ran onto the cross and volleyed it into the net for a 2-0 Cougar lead.
As if they needed help, the Cougars received a gift in the 65th minute. Lancer keeper Adam Kramer made an initial save on a shot by Stirm, but his rebound deflected off a CBU defender and into the goal, giving Stirm his third goal of the season.
The Lancers look to rebound Tuesday afternoon when they travel to San Diego, Calif., to take on Point Loma Nazarene. Kickoff is scheduled for 4 p.m.
