Lancers Blank Denver for Michaelson’s 100th CBU Victory

RIVERSIDE --- The long-awaited home debut for California Baptist men's soccer pitted the Lancers against the Pioneers of Denver University. Bookended by goals in both halves, the Lancers gave their hometown fans the outcome they wanted as CBU picked up its second 2-0 win of the season.
Monday's victory is a milestone moment for CBU's head coach, Coe Michaelson. Michaelson won his 100th match with the Lancers, a tenure that dates back to 2016 when CBU was a Division II program.
The Lancers were the aggressors throughout Monday's match, starting in the first half when CBU controlled 65-percent of the possession and ripped off 12 shots to Denver's three. Three of CBU's opening half shots registered on frame, none bigger than the left-footed strike of Liam Jones in the 36th minute.
Set up by a Tizian Marth pass, Jones sped down the field before firing from 25 yards out. The low attack sank into the bottom left corner, past the outstretched reach of Denver goalkeeper Alex Hohl, giving the Lancers a 1-0 advantage.
CBU continued to control the attack in the second half, adding 15 more shot attempts; however, only one finished on frame.
After several near misses, the clinching goal finally came in the 90th minute thanks to junior Blake D'Agostino. Senior Luis Borrero built the chance by pushing the ball into the penalty area, where a wide-open D'Agostino sat on the back post. D'Agostino tapped home the goal on his second touch, giving the Lancers the two-goal cushion they were looking for.
The goals for D'Agostino and Jones were both their second of the year. It also marks the second 2-0 victory for CBU in which goals came from the Lancers' two leading goal scorers from a season ago.
Michaelson looked to freshman Ulrik Stroem in goal for the second consecutive match. Stroem earned his first collegiate victory after recording one save in 90 minutes of action.
The final shot total from Monday saw the Lancers outshoot Denver 27-7. CBU also controlled 61 percent of possession.
Monday's match marked the second of three consecutive for the Lancers against host teams from last year's NCAA Tournament. The Lancers' next opponent, San Diego, is currently ranked No. 2 in the United Soccer Coaches Poll. A new poll will be released on Tuesday morning. The Lancers and San Diego met once last season, a match that ended in a heartbreaking 3-2 defeat for CBU.
Saturday's meeting with the Toreros is one of the most anticipated matches of the season, as it is Welcome Weekend at CBU. The match is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
