STOCKTON, Calif. ? The overtime tank finally ran dry for California Baptist when it fell Sunday, 14-13, to Harvard in the final day of the University of Pacific Tournament. Despite losing a heartbreaking game to the Crimson, the Lancers (19-10) rebounded with an 11-4 decision over Fresno Pacific.
The Lancers looked to be grabbing their third overtime victory this season after Aaron Steiger scored with 52 seconds left in the first overtime period, but Harvard tied the game at 13 with 1:40 left in the second OT period and stole the game with 50 seconds left to play on a goal by Chris Ludwick.
“I guess we like to play catch up and force things into overtime,” said CBU head coach Rick Rowland. “We just ran out of ways to win today. Everything kind of caught up with us. We didn't play that well and we got into some foul trouble. Three of our guys decided they would get in foul trouble and that cost us in overtime.”
Steiger led the way for CBU scoring four goals while brother, Ryan Steiger, and Jason Bills scored three goals each. Chris Morgan, Josh Harris and Alan Ogden all scored single goals. Jon Miller racked up 19 saves in the loss.
The loss was the first this year for CBU in overtime. The Lancers had won two previous overtime games against Concordia, at the Lancer Invite, and over George Washington, Saturday at the Pacific Tournament.
The Lancers rounded out the tournament with their third straight win over Fresno Pacific. Kenny Koch scored a game-high three goals, his first hat trick of the year. Louis Talamantes netted a pair of goals while Morgan, David Graves, Ogden, Aaron Steiger, Greg Smith and Scott Gleason all scored single goals. Zach Bowman recorded 12 saves in goal and also recorded an assist and a steal.
“It was good that we could get some of the guys off the bench to come in and get some good minutes,” said Rowland. “It was nice to see them play well. Bowman did an excellent job in the net.”
