THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. ? Ryan Steiger scored five goals on the opening day of the California Lutheran University Fall Tournament as the Lancers defeated Mercyhurst, 10-8, and California Lutheran, 13-6.
Morgan, Ryan Steiger and Aaron Steiger all combined for nine goals as each scored a hat trick in the opener against Mercyhurst. Josh Harris scored the other goal for CBU. Morgan and Harris gave the Lancers a 2-0 lead early, but Mercyhurst tied the game at two before the end of the first quarter. The Lakers took a 3-2 lead, but Aaron Steiger tied the game at three. After MC took the lead at 4-3, CBU answered again on a goal by Morgan. Aaron Steiger then gave the Lancers the lead again with 4:04 left in the half, but the Lakers tied the game again at five to end the half.
Aaron Steiger give CBU its third lead of the game before the Lakers tied the game for the fifth time before Ryan Steiger broke the tie for good with 1:29 left in the third quarter. Morgan and Ryan Steiger both added goals in the fourth quarter to give CBU a 9-6 lead which was good enough to hold off a late run by the Lakers. Mercyhurst cut the lead to 8-9 before Ryan Steiger put the finishing touches with a late goal.
The Lancers scored the first seven goals of the game against CLU and cruised from there. CBU had a 6-0 lead at the end of the first quarter. Ogden scored three of his four goals in the opening quarter alone. Ryan Steiger scored a pair of goals and David Graves also scored a goal in the first quarter. The Lancers carried a 9-2 advantage into halftime as Harris, Graves and Brett Landfield all added goals in the second quarter. Morgan scored the lone goal in the third quarter before Harris, Ogden and Ryan Steiger added a goal each to close out the game.
CBU returns to the water tomorrow with a pair of games to finish out the Cal Lutheran Tournament. The Lancers will play Redlands at 9:15 a.m. before taking on Occidental at 3:30 p.m.
