CLAREMONT, Calif. ? Ryan Steiger scored five goals while Jon Miller recorded 10 saves and three steals as California Baptist's two captains led the Lancers to a 10-6 win over Claremont-Mudd. The Lancers (13-6) entered the third quarter tied at five, but scored four straight goals including two by Steiger to take a 9-5 lead. Both teams added a goal late to round out the final score.
“It's great that we are finishing strong right now,” said CBU head coach Rick Rowland. “We haven't always had teams that were that strong in the fourth quarter, but these guys continue to come through in the end. We got some good shooting from Ryan and Jon did a great job in goal.”
The Lancers have won 11 straight and have scored in double digits for seven straight games. The win over the Stags marked the second game in less than a week that CBU used a late charge to win the game. The Lancers scored two goals late against Concordia Saturday in the Lancer Invitational before forcing overtime and the eventual sudden death goal.
“This is exactly where we want to be right now,” said Rowland. “We are playing well. We hope we can carry this up to Colorado this week.”
CBU scored seven of its 10 goals naturally and three on 6-on-5 opportunities. The Stags converted on two missed 6-on-5 chances by the Lancers with both goals giving CMS the only ties of the game at 3-3 and 5-5.
Aaron Steiger was the only other Lancer to score multiple goals with two while Jason Bills, Chris Morgan and Josh Harris all had single goals. Morgan also had three assists.
The Lancers now head to Colorado Springs, Colo., to play in the USAFA East Meets West Tournament. CBU will take on Cal Lutheran and Pacific, Friday, before taking on Air Force Saturday.
