LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Biola put California Baptist University on the firing line Tuesday night, and the Lancers did all they could to dodge the bullets.
However, Derek Friehe's first goal of the season with just 39 seconds left pierced the Lancers and gave the Eagles a dramatic 2-1 come-from-behind win.
The Eagles out-shot the Lancers, 22-7, including a 13-4 advantage in the second half, and scored twice in the second half, the second score coming after a missed penalty kick, a hit post and with a man advantage.
The loss drops the Lancers, 7-6-3 overall, 3-4-2 (11 points) GSAC, while Biola improves to 7-6-2, 2-5-2 (8 points), snapping a five-game winless skid.
Though, the Lancers took the loss, they still wrapped up their first playoff berth since 1990 because of losses by both Hope International and Point Loma Nazarene. CBU will be making just its second playoff appearance ever.
It appeared as if the Lancers might sneak away with three points after taking a 1-0 lead in the first half. However, the Eagles struck quickly in the first six minutes of the second to tie the game. Then, it appeared as if the Lancers would sneak away salvaging one point, but the Eagles threw everything but the kitchen sink at the Lancers, and Friehe's late heroics dashed those hopes.
With the game tied 1-1, the Eagles were awarded a penalty kick after Spenser Steele was red-carded for a handball in the box. However, Jeff Redinger stoned Nick Bautista's attempt, and then he saved Bautista's follow off the rebound to keep the game deadlocked. Bullet dodged.
Three minutes later, Bautsita hit the post. Another bullet dodged.
However, less than two minutes after Bautista hit the post, Friehe was able to break through when he converted from eight yards out on a cross from Tony Montalvo, shocking the Lancers.
The Eagles out-shot the Lancers, 9-3, in the first half, but the Lancers had all three of their shots in the first eight minutes and put all three of them on goal, including one in the goal.
In the eighth minute, CBU was awarded their first corner kick of the game. Willie Rupert served an in-swinger into the box, and Osvaldo Bastida tucked away the game's first goal at the 7:51 mark. Bastida snapped a six-game scoreless streak with his sixth goal of the season, and the Lancers carried the one-goal advantage into the intermission.
The Eagles came out firing as soon as the second half whistle blew. Marco Ruvalcaba ripped a shot that caromed off the crossbar just 1:40 in. Bautista then fired another shot that was blocked by a Lancer defender 3:32 in. Then finally, in the 51st minute, Zach Bautista crossed a ball into the box that Jake Ravenscraft deflected into the net to tie the game at 1-1.
In the next 12 minutes the Lancers went on the attack, ripping three shots, two of which were saved by Eagle keeper Aaron Fenalson, who finished with four saves. Redinger finished with three saves. Both teams had five shots on frame.
