PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. --- California Baptist University shot two rounds under 300 to key its way to a first-place finish at the Biola Invitational played at Poppy Hills Golf Club at Pebble Beach, Calif.
It is the first tournament victory in program history.
The Lancers' shot an opening-round 298 Monday and then followed it up with a second-round 295 today to total a 593. They won the event by 15 strokes over The Master's.
“The guys played consistently well the entire tournament,” said CBU Head Coach Lane Pace. “Yesterday, the weather was perfect, not typical fall weather in Monterey. Today, it was cloudy and cold, a typical Monterey day, yet we shot better. We were finally able to finish out a tournament and get a victory.”
Fernando Menendez put together the best tournament of his career, shooting a 146 (74-72) to finish second. Bryan Sandoval and Carl Stjarnfalt both finished fifth with an identical 149 (74-75). Daniel Osorio finished 10th with a 152 (79-73), and Andrew Falero finished 16th with a 158 (76-82).
CBU entered two separate teams, and CBU “B” team finished fifth in the sixth-team tournament with a 632, just six strokes away from fourth. Ivan Fuganti also finished second with a 146 (72-74), tying Menendez.
Marcelo Souza was 13th with a 155 (78-77). Brad Strzelczyk was 21st with a 163 (83-80). Robert Parker was 24th with a 168 (89-79), and Dante Hernenadez was 28th with a 171 (90-81).
