RIVERSIDE, Calif. --- Robert Lundy was 4-for-5 and was on base all five times he hit lifting California Baptist to a big 8-3 GSAC win over Biola Wednesday afternoon at Totman Stadium.
The win, which came just a few hours after both teams fell out of the latest NAIA Top 25, is the Lancers' fifth straight as they improve to 15-5 overall, 5-4 GSAC. They also improve to 13-0 at home this year. Biola falls to 9-6, 4-5.
“We play well at home and need to keep taking care of the games at home,” said CBU head coach Gary Adcock. “The trick is to carry the momentum we built up at home onto the road. It was a good team effort today with guys picking each other up.”
Lundy, who also scored three times, reached on an error in the first, had an RBI single in the second, doubled and scored in the fourth, singled in the sixth and singled and scored in the eighth.
The Lancers had a season-high 16 hits, 15 of them off Eagle starter Brian Albert. Thirteen of the hits were singles. Albert (1-3) went 7-2 innings, giving up all 8 runs (five earned) and striking out two.
“We did a great job in plus counts,” said Gary Adcock. “Hitting in some 2-0 and 3-1 counts, we were able to drive the ball, and we got a handful of two-out RBIs.”
Kevin Duke started for the Lancers but was lifted with two outs in the fourth. The Eagles, who were trailing 5-1 at the time, loaded the bases with one out, but Duke struck out David West before giving way to Chilly Ronquillo, who got Daniel Bodemer to ground out to third to end the inning.
Ronquilo worked a 1-2-3 fifth and retired the first five batters he faced before giving up a solo blast to Matt McQueen that made it 6-2 in the sixth. After giving up a walk and a single, he struck out West and pinch-hitter Brent Opdyke to end that threat. Ronquillo picked up the win in relief.
“Our offense and defense picked us up, because I didn't think we pitched well today,” said Adcock. “We were unable to get a tempo all day with the exception of Chilly's 1-2-3 inning. We pitched behind too much. However, what gets lost in it is the fact that Kevin worked his way out of a big jam there in the fourth that could've changed the entire game. If he doesn't get West out, it's a different game.”
Biola had 12 hits but left 11 runners on base.
Steve Goins was 3-for-5 with three RBIs, and he had an RBI single that gave the Lancers a 1-0 lead in the first. Sharif Othman and Lundy then had consecutive RBI singles in the Lancers' three-run second that gave them a 4-0 lead. Goins had another RBI single in the fourth that gave the Lancers a 6-1 lead and then completed his day with an RBI single in the eighth that gave the Lancers their 8-3 lead.
Zach Aguirre was 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI single in the third. Brandon Peters had an RBI single in the seventh. Levi Garrett was 2-for-4 with three runs scored.
