RIVERSIDE, Calif. --- Three-time All-GSAC Steve Goins put together one of his finest outings of the season in a 7-0 win over Biola last Thursday, and Monday he was rewarded.
For the first time this season and third time in his decorated career, Goins was named GSAC Pitcher of the Week.
After giving up 13 earned runs in his previous 13 innings, Goins hurled eight shutout innings, scattering seven hits and striking out seven to lead the Lancers to a big shutout of No. 19 Biola. Of the Eagles' seven hits, six of them were singles. He didn't walk a batter and only allowed one runner to reach second base. Goins, now 7-3 on the season, is third in the GSAC with a 2.47 ERA and fourth with 67 strikeouts in 76.2 innings.
Goins was named GSAC Pitcher of the Week twice last season, earning the honor March 19 and April 2. As a 2006 sophomore, he earned GSAC Player of the Week March 13. Goins is one of three Lancers, joining Steve Ferreira and Aaron Seuss, to earn a trio of all-conference honors and is making a strong push to become the first Lancer ever to earn four all-conference awards at the end of this season. One of the best two-way players in the league, Goins is currently in the GSAC's top 10 in hitting (.382), hits (63), ERA and strikeouts.
CBU is currently 28-14 overall, 17-11 GSAC, currently in fourth place with eight games remaining. The Lancers trail defending GSAC champion and No. 4 Azusa Pacific (21-7) by four games. The Cougars and Lancers complete their season-series this week with a home-and-home series, playing Wednesday at Azusa Pacific and Thursday at California Baptist. Both games are at 3 p.m. The Lancers are also four games ahead of seventh place The Master's (13-15). The Lancers travel to The Master's for a doubleheader Saturday. Only the top six teams in the GSAC have a chance to qualify for the NAIA Region II Playoffs in May.
