RIVERSIDE--- California Baptist baseball split the day against UT Arlington, securing the Western Athletic Conference series despite falling to the Mavericks in the final game. The Lancers kicked off the day with a 6-4 win over the Texan squad before UTA unleashed an offensive storm on CBU and secured the second gam 19-1. California Baptist moves to 29-7 on the season and is now 4-2 in conference play.
The first game of the day saw UTA enter hot, scoring the first run of the day via an RBI double to take an early lead. The 1-0 scoreline wouldn't hold for long as Diesel Toth stepped up to the plate with one runner on and knocked an RBI single to tie the game in the second inning. The following inning saw Bryce McFeely hit his 11th home run of the season over right field to gift CBU the lead. Toth would make his way back up the plate and hit a 422-foot homer on the first pitch of the fifth inning before a Cole Hansen RBI single put the Lancers ahead by two. Gary Adcock's squad added onto their lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh, but the Mavericks didn't go down without a fight and threatened in the top of the ninth with a two-run homer. Andrew Rudd didn't panic and drew a pair of ground-outs to end the game with a 6-4 victory.
Toth led the way with three hits and two RBI during the first game, while Bryan Peck tossed an excellent game from the mound. Peck went eight innings and gave up just five hits with two runs to secure his fifth pitching victory this season.
The second half of the doubleheader was all UT Arlington from the get-go, putting up 14 runs in the first four innings. The Mavericks had an offensive outburst that the Lancers hadn't seen this weekend, while the Lancers were held to six hits. CBU did manage to avoid being shut out, thanks to a sacrifice fly from Matthew Bline that brought home Carter Eberhard. The major deficit invoked the run rule, and so UTA enjoyed a seven-inning victory to avoid being swept. Despite falling 19-1, the Lancer pitching staff did dish out 11 strikeouts.
California Baptist will now turn its attention to this Tuesday, heading up the road to UC Riverside for an away midweek game, and will look to get back on track before traveling to Texas again for Western Athletic Conference play next weekend.
