RIVERSIDE, Calif. --- California Baptist University scored three goals in 13 minutes and then put the clamps down defensively, defeating Cal Poly Pomona, 3-1, Tuesday afternoon.
The win moves the Lancers to 2-0 for the second straight year and is their final home game until hosting defending national champion Azusa Pacific Oct. 11. The game counts as exhibition for the Broncos and will not count against their record.
“This was a pretty similar game to Saturday night (vs. Cal State San Bernardino),” said CBU head coach Ryan Jorden. “We had a very good spell in the first half and took advantage with our three goals.”
Less than two minutes into the contest the Lancers broke into the box and Chris Dierker fired a shot from the left side that deflected off a Bronco defender and trickled across the area. Tim Wardell raced down the right side unmarked and buried the deflection into the net for a quick 1-0 lead.
Just 2:28 later, Gabriel Gonzalez put away his second goal in as many games when he took a pass from Osvaldo Bastida turned over his right shoulder and hammered a shot past a diving Thomas Ryan and into the net.
The Broncos were able to cut the deficit in half in the 13th minute when Miguel Abascal scored off a deflection from a corner kick. However, just 1:08 later, Dustin Taniguchi blistered his first career goal with a strike from 25 yards out that curled just inside the far post.
In the first 13 minutes, the Lancers had three shots on target, all of them hitting the back of the net. They finished the game with just seven shots, while the Broncos ramped up the pressure with 10 second half shots, but Jeff Redinger was up to the task, collecting four saves, three in the second half.
“We've been here for 15 days, and the guys have worked extremely hard doing what we want them to do,” said Jorden. “They have put is in a position to be successful and we have two wins out of it. They've worked hard the past two weeks and are tired. For all intents and purposes this concludes our training camp segment of the season and so far so good.”
