IRVINE, Calif. — Not since the first two games of his coaching career at California Baptist University has Ryan McGuyre had to coach back-to-back five set matches. After CBU fell in five sets to No. 1 Fresno Pacific, the No. 2-ranked Lancers survived a five set match with No. 4 Concordia, 3-2 (15-25, 25-17, 22-25, 25-18, 15-9)
With the win the Lancers (25-4, 15-4 GSAC) secure second place in the Golden State Athletic Conference.
CBU had two players with double-doubles as Fei Shi had 19 kills and 13 digs, all while hitting at a .304 clip, and Noelle Dyk had 13 kills and 15 digs. Ingrid Carmona had 17 kills, four digs and three blocks and Krista Hasemeyer dished out a match-high 47 assists. Hasemeyer also had three blocks.
Kari Oliver posted a career-high 27 digs while Rene Simon tied a career-high with seven blocks.
CBU out dug Concordia by 17, 86-69, but got out blocked 12-9. The Lancers also out hit the Eagles, .235-.144.
After both teams traded off on the first four points of the opening set, Concordia unloaded, scoring 14 straight points to lead 15-2. Amber Ridens had six aces in the run. The Eagles took their biggest lead of the set at 20-5, but that's when the Lancers began to battle back. CBU cut its deficit to 22-14 with a 9-2 run capped by a Shi kill. The Lancers made it 23-15 on a Carmona kill, but that was a close as they came.
The Lancers used the momentum they built at the end of the first set to take the second set and tie the match at 1-1. Neither team led by more than two early in the set, until CBU broke a 7-7 tie with a 7-1 run. Shi had bookend kills in the run. The Lancers took their biggest lead of eight three times, including the final point that was scored on a Concordia error.
The Lancers three times held leads of five, with the last coming at 13-8, in the third set, but Concordia scored five straight to tie it at 13. CBU answered with two straight to make it 15-13, but Concordia never went away. Leading 20-18, the Lancers saw the Eagles use a 7-2 run to close out the set and take a 2-1 lead in the match.
It was all CBU in the fourth and fifth sets as the Lancers never trailed. The Lancers scored the first eight points of the fourth and led 14-4, holding that 10-point lead until 23-13. CBU then took its biggest lead of the set on the final two points as Shi ripped a pair of kills to force the final set. The Lancers led 4-3 in the fifth set before Shi sparked a 5-1 run to break away and seal the match.
CBU now can close its 2009 regular season with a pair of home contests by hosting NCAA Division II No. 2 Cal State San Bernardino and Hope International. Thursday is “Foster Care Awareness Night” with the Coyotes at 7 p.m., and Saturday is “Senior Night” against the Royals at 7:30 p.m.
