SIOUX CITY, Iowa — For the previous five seasons the semifinals of the NAIA Volleyball National Championship have been a lock for California Baptist. The Lancers were the only team in NAIA to reach the semifinals in each of those five seasons, but a sixth straight final four and thoughts of a national title run were out of reach for CBU Friday night.
Exacting revenge from last year's pool play upset, No. 6 Georgetown (Ky.) returned the favor by knocking off the favored Lancers (29-6) 3-1 (24-26, 25-23, 25-22, 25-23) in the last quarterfinal match of the night.
It was the first time in Ryan McGuyre's time as CBU's head coach that he has not taken his team past the quarterfinals when they've reached the national tournament.
The Lancers had high expectations after having just five losses, four of them in five sets, and all five losses came to top 15-ranked teams. The loss to the Tigers (44-3) was just the second time this year that it took less than five sets to knock off CBU.
In a night where it seemed nothing would fall, Georgetown put every attack CBU fired back up in the air. The Tigers returned an unbelievable 83 digs in the air, many of which were bombs off of Lancer arms. Four Tigers posted double-figure kills with Amy Barmore leading the way with 24.
Barmore was not to be outdone as Kari Oliver matched her with 24 digs, the second highest dig total in her career. The Lancers put up 81 digs, marking just the seventh time this season that CBU got out dug. Katie Lockard also had 11 digs. The Lancers were also outdone at the net having just three blocks compared to Georgetown's seven.
Fei Shi closed out her final game of her illustrious career with 13 kills and eight digs while her senior counterpart, Noelle Dyk, finished with 11 kills. Shi closes out her career with 1,822 career kills, just 50 short of tying Verania Willis (2005-07) for CBU's career record. Shi became just the second Lancer in history to surpass the 1,800-kill mark.
Ingrid Carmona finished with a team-high 15 kills and tied a career-high with eight digs. She also had three aces. Krista Hasemeyer dished out a team-high 37 assists and posted her sixth double-double of the season with a career-high 14 digs.
The Lancers fought from behind in the first set, but watched Georgetown do the same in the third and fourth sets.
The Lancers trailed 20-16 in the opening set 20-16 before charging to tie it at 20. The Tigers went back up 22-20, but CBU took a 23-22 lead on a kill from Dyk and back-to-back kills from Carmona. Georgetown scored two straight to take set point at 24-23, but another pair of kills from Carmona gave CBU set point at 25-24 before Shi put it away to give CBU a 1-0 lead.
The Tigers never trailed in the second set to tie the match at one and trailed until late in the third. CBU held a 20-18 lead in the third, but Georgetown used a 5-1 run to take a 23-21 lead that it never gave back. The Lancers led 17-14 in the final set, but another late run (8-3) spelled doom for CBU.
The Lancers were able to tie the set at 23, but the Tigers scored the final two points to take the win and move on to the semifinals.
It will be the first time in two years that it will not be an all GSAC semifinals.
