RIVERSIDE, Calif. --- In a battle between Inland Empire rivals, the NAIA's No. 4-ranked California Baptist University won all six singles' matches in straight sets for its third straight 9-0 victory, this one coming against NCAA Division III No. 13-ranked Redlands Saturday in a non-conference match in Riverside.
The win moves the Lancers' 5-1 overall. The Bulldogs fall to 6-3.
Lucas Pereira and Gabor Toth got the day started with an 8-6 win over Chris Trippel and Casey Fashouer at No. 3 doubles. Alessandro Ventre and Carlos Cirne-Lime gave the Lancers a 2-0 lead with an 8-5 win over Mike Reading and Cameron Spearman and No. 1, and then Martin Vaisse and Oliver Andrzjzcuk edged Jeff Hammond and Kevin Wong, 9-7, at No. 2 to complete the doubles' sweep.
The Lancers then slammed the door sweeping singles' play. Toth gave the Lancers a 4-0 advantage when Hammond retired down 5-0 in the first set at No. 6. Vaisse then clinched the match with a 6-0, 6-3 win over Matt Liebman at No. 4.
“They pushed us really hard in doubles, and it certainly could have gone either way,” said CBU Head Coach Chris Taylor. “Coach Roche has done an outstanding job developing some great doubles players. They are a solid team, but the guys stepped up and closed the door in singles. This was a pretty good week, but we can't relax as Vanguard is waiting for us Tuesday.”
