COSTA MESA, Calif. --- The NAIA's No. 4-ranked California Baptist University overcame a 2-0 deficit with six straight wins to post a 6-3 GSAC road win at No. No. 6 Vanguard Tuesday.
The win is the Lancers' fifth straight as they improve to 6-1 overall, 4-1 GSAC.
The Lions stormed out of the gate, winning at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles, both by 8-4 scores. It was the third time in seven matches this year that the Lancers fell behind after doubles. Martin Vaisse and Oliver Andrzjczuk picked up the Lancers' lone point, defeated Sandro Bucher and Thomas Frank, 8-4, at No. 2.
As has been the case most of this season, the Lancers dominated in singles' play. The Lions, who were without their usual No. 1 singles' player, Dominic Stoeckler, earned their lone point at No. 2 when the Lancers' Carlos Cirne-Lima retired trailing 7-5, 3-2.
Other than that, the Lancers rolled to straight set wins in four of the other five matches with the closest score in any set being 6-3. Lucas Pereira needed to go to a third set tiebreaker to defeat Tino Brodar, 7-6, 4-6, 10-7, at No. 3. Vaisse picked up the clinching point with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Frank at No. 4.
“Vanguard usually isn't a great doubles team, but they were lights out today,” said CBU Head Coach Chris Taylor, who both played and was an assistant coach at Vanguard prior to taking the Lancer helm prior to the 2007 season. “We played well in doubles, which isn't usually the case for us. But there was nothing we could have done today, Vanguard was that good. However, it was business as usual in singles. I'm sure when Dominic returns the next time we play them, it will be a much closer match.”
