RIVERSIDE, Calif. ? Jacob Medina has secured six roster spots for the 2010 women's water polo team as the California Baptist University head coach begins to build for the next season.
Ashley Dorrego, Morgan Barrows, Christina Webb, Alison Glaser, Kim Latschaw and Micaela Doucette all will step into the pool for the 2010 season.
“I'm very excited about the addition of these six young ladies who will be adding a great deal of depth to the women's water polo program,” said Medina. “Each of them has competed for excellent high school and club programs and comes to CBU with a wealth of talent and experience as well as tremendous competitive fire. I have no doubt they will each aid immensely in the future success of the women's water polo program and be positive contributors to the program's continued rise in the collegiate ranks.”
Dorrego comes to CBU from Santiago High in Corona, Calif., where she played four varsity seasons and helped lead the Sharks to three straight Mountain View League titles. She helped lead SHS to the CIF finals as a junior and senior. Dorrego was two-time All-CIF and All-Mountain View League first team selection. She holds the Santiago High single-game (11), single-season (150) and career (268) records for steals.
“In addition to being a superb defender, Ashley also is a very talented and creative threat at the offensive end of the pool,” said Medina. “Ashley played her club water polo at CHAWP and comes to CBU with a wealth of great water polo experience at both the high school and club levels. Both her water polo abilities and experience will lend to making the transition to the college level much easier and will undoubtedly add depth to an already strong CBU defense as she teams-up once again with former teammate Camryn Rogers.”
Barrows adds to the tradition of Clovis, Calif., talent as she makes her way to CBU from Clovis West High. She led CWHS to the CIF Division I championship andwas selected to the all-valley and All-Tri-River Athletic Conference first teams. She was also named all-city and was selected to the Fresno Bee All-Star team.
“Morgan comes to CBU as a fantastic all-around player whose speed and water polo prowess places her in a great position to make serious contributions to the team,” said Medina.
Webb, a Mount Carmel High product, played for the Shores water polo club in San Diego, Calif. She helped lead the Sun Devils to three Palomar League titles and earned an All-Palomar League and San Diego North County team selection as a junior and senior. She played four years of varsity water polo and swam four varsity seasons at MCHS. She was a part of three CIF runner-up performances in swimmming, earned a CIF title on her 200 free relay team, and was an all-league and San Diego All-North County Team selection in swimming.
“Christina brings a great outside shot and speed to our program,” said Medina. “Her speed and strong arm will be a welcomed addition to the CBU women's water polo program and will add to our strong perimeter play.”
Glaser was selected to both the All-CIF and All-Southwestern League first teams as a senior at Chaparral High in Temecula, Calif. She helped lead the Pumas to back-to-back CIF semifinal appearances and a Southwestern League Championship. She was also a Southwestern League scholar athlete
“Alison is a solid water polo player who is a very well rounded water polo athlete who will contribute greatly on both ends of the pool,” said Medina.
Latschaw makes her way to Riverside from Curtis High in University Place, Wash., where she helped lead the Lady Vikings to two state titles and was named the state tournament offensive MVP for her nine goal performance in the state title game her junior year. She was selected to the all-league and all-state teams.
“Kim is a left handed two-meter set player with considerable speed,” said Medina. “She will bring a great knack for finding the back of the net as well as offering us more depth on the lefthander's side of the pool.”
Doucette joins the Lancers after playing at Vista (Calif.) High where she led the Panthers to back-to-back San Diego Division I CIF and Palomar League championships. She also played for the North San Diego Stars water polo club.”
“She will serve as a defensive bulwark for us just like she did in high school,” said Medina. “She is a great defensive two-meter guard with loads of water polo experience and a passion for the game.”
