RIVERSIDE--- The California Baptist University women's water polo closed out its regular season on Friday afternoon as it battled #7 LMU in a GCC contest for Senior Day.
The Lancers hung in with the Lions early on, but LMU's offense proved to be too much as they would grind out the 14-7 victory at the Lancer Aquatics Center. LMU is the highest-ranked team the Lancers have faced this season, and the loss brings their final GCC record to 3-3 and will lock them into the fourth spot in the conference standings. On the flip side, the Lions clinched the GCC Regular Season title and the #1 seed with the victory, at a perfect 5-0. CBU finishes the regular season 13-10, which is the most wins since 2023 for the program.
The Lancers honored its seven seniors before the match began, with Amelia Urry, Tyanna Schneider, Morgan Gates, Devyn Ruffer, Julia Almendariz, Reese Beringer, and Aubrey Newton all being honored.
LMU came out of the gates firing as they would quickly punch through four goals on the Lancers to force an early Julia Snodgrass timeout. The Lancers would slow the Lion offense down for the rest of the period, but LMUJ would still lead 4-0 after eight minutes. CBU would dominate the second period, beginning with a quick 3-0 run that included back-to-back goals from Niya Bumbaca to cut the LMU lead to just one. The Lions would sneak one in to end the run, but the Lancers would score again at the 2:44 mark via Madison Haworth to keep it a one-goal game. The Lions would give themselves more breathing room heading into halftime with a pair of goals from Anna Tarantino to make it 7-4 at the half.
The Lions would extend their lead to five goals to begin the third period, but the Lancers would offset those goals with two quick ones from Bumbaca and Bella Raynes. LMU would not be deterred and would finish the match on a 5-1 run to secure the victory by a final score of 14-7.
Bumbaca led the Lancer offense with her seventh hat trick of the season and would dish out one assist for a four-point afternoon. Emmie Ramirez and Georgia Eccles would each have two points while three Lancer goalkeepers combined for six total saves.
NEXT: The Lancers will have a week off before competing in the GCC Tournament beginning on Thursday, April 11, in Fresno, CA.
