IRVINE, Calif. — California Baptist University ran through a gauntlet of matches Saturday at the Asics/Crowne Plaza Labor Day Tournament hosted by Concordia.
CBU mowed down Northwest (Wash.) and Lewis-Clark State (Idaho) in straight sets before going the distance with Cornerstone (Mich.). The Lancers handled Northwest (25-11, 25-18, 25-21) before moving through LCSC (25-14, 25-17, 25-15). CBU looked to be on their way to another 3-0 victory after taking the first two sets from Cornerstone at 25-14 and 25-15, but Cornerstone took the next two sets each at 25-23. The Lancers were able to pull out the fifth and final set at 15-8 to move to 9-0 on the year
The Lancers needed just an hour to take down Northwest. Ingrid Carmona led the way with 12 kills as she was one of nine Lancers to record a kill. Noelle Dyk had seven kills and 10 digs off of the bench while Bree Rauschenbach and Jessica Ewoldt each had six.
Danielle Sargant nabbed her second double-double of her career, dishing out 25 assists and 10 digs. Krista Hasemeyer added 15 assists and was four assists shy of a double-double with six. Rene Simon led the way at the net with four blocks.
As a team, CBU hit .292 (51-18-113) and held the Eagles to just a .013 clip (14-13-77). The Lancers also out dug (45-36) and out blocked (8-6) Northwest.
CBU got a double-double from Dyk, her third of the year, as she ripped 11 kills and posted 12 digs in a 2-0 (25-14, 25-17, 25-15) win over Lewis-Clark State. Fei Shi led CBU with a match-high 12 kills while Sargant and Hasemeyer split setting duties. Sargant handed out 20 assists while Hasemeyer had 15. Carmona also had eight kills. Rauschenbach served a trio of aces while Kari Oliver posted a match-high 13 digs. Sweeney also had a season-high five blocks.
The Lancers hit their second highest percentage of the year at .333 (46-14-96) and also notched 8.5 blocks.
Ewoldt ripped a career-high 19 kills and hit a .410 clip (19-3-39) as she and Jessica Kalama, who had 10 kill, were the only two Lancers with double-figure kills in the win over Cornerstone. Sargant and Hasemeyer combined for 58 assists with Sargant notching a match-high 31 and posted another double-double with 10 digs. Oliver recorded a career-high 15 digs, just two days after setting it with 14 digs against Westmont.
CBU will take on Westminster (Utah) at 5 p.m. and Oklahoma City at 9 p.m. to wrap up the Labor Day Tournament.
