SANTA BARBARA, Calif. --- Ingrid Carmona has been the offensive leader for No. 6 California Baptist University all season.
Saturday night she took charge on both sides of the ball to lead CBU to a much needed 3-1 (28-26, 19-25, 25-11, 25-15) victory over Westmont.
“Ingrid played great defensively tonight and that helped get us on track,” said Head Coach Ryan McGuyre. “She led the way, but we really got good play from a lot of our role players as well.”
The Lancers had four players record double digit dig totals and three break the 10 kill mark. Carmona led all players with 20 kills and 25 digs for her sixth double-double of the season. It is the first time the sophomore opposite hitter has broken the 20 mark in both categories this season. The closest she came was in the first match against the Warriors when she recorded 25 kills and 18 digs.
After losing Thursday to No. 13 Azusa Pacific, the Lancers could ill afford another conference loss and that sense of urgency kicked in after the two teams split the first two sets.
“We came out sluggish at the start, but I was happy with the way we finished,” said McGuyre. “We just seemed to find our rhythm in the third game and were able to close it out.”
The Lancers came out swinging in the third, jumping on top 9-0 before the home team could manage a point. Bree Rauschenbach, Jelena Dragovic and Carmona ripped three straight emphatic kills to open the set and force an early timeout by the Warriors. Three straight errors by the home team out of the timeout kept the run alive. A kill by the Warrior's Candace Adema finally ended the run, but Westmont was unable to mount any real comeback as the Lancers cruised to a 25-11 win.
The fourth and final set was more of the same, with CBU taking a 6-2 lead and never letting the Warriors get within four points the rest of the way.
“This was a win that we had to have,” said McGuyre. “Another loss would have made things a lot harder for us. Trying to climb out of a hole is very difficult in this conference.”
The Lancers completed the season sweep of Westmont, keeping a 14 match winning streak against the Warriors alive. CBU runs its record to 22-3 overall, 9-3 GSAC, to hold on to sole possession of third place in the conference standings. Westmont falls to 9-12, 3-9.
CBU is back in action Tuesday at home against No. 15 Point Loma Nazarene.
