RIVERSIDE, Calif. --- Payback was Sweet as No. 14 California Baptist avenged an early season home loss to Golden West College at the Concordia Invitational.
On the day the Lancers tallied two more wins to their total (22-3) with an 11-8 win over Golden West and a 12-5 win against Vanguard.
In the early game CBU faced familiar foe Vanguard, a team it set a scoring record against on Sept. 18 with a 22-8 win.
However, Vanguard was much improved and it showed early.
After the first quarter the Lions had CBU shaking its head with a 3-2 lead, but the Lancers responded.
In the second CBU used defense, shutting out the Lions while scoring two.
The next quarter the Lancers showed their versatility, putting up five goals, compared to Vanguard's one. After three CBU led 9-5, and the match was no longer in doubt.
The final quarter had three goals from each squad as CBU continued on to a convincing 12-5 win.
In the second of the two matches the Lancers were looking for a little revenge. CBU lost 9-12 at home on Sept. 29 (the team's last loss) against a talented group from Golden West.
In this game CBU had a chance to repay the favor in the Rustler's home pool.
The opening quarter saw both teams put up three goals as CBU struggled to make an early impression. However, in the second the Lancers were able to gain a one goal lead to go ahead 6-5 at the half.
In the third CBU was able to add a little separation before posting an 11-8 victory.
The win continued the Lancers' and Rustlers pattern of alternating wins and losses. In the last five games the teams have traded wins with CBU holding a 3-2 lead.
The Lancers will have a short break before heading north to face Fresno Pacific on Oct. 21.
