SALT LAKE CITY, Utah --- California Baptist University suffered its first loss of the season Thursday night, falling to tournament host No. 10 Westminster 65-54.
Turnovers and poor free throw shooting plagued the Lancers, as CBU lost the ball 21 times and shot just 57 percent from the line.
“We just didn't play well down the stretch,” said Head Coach John Marcum. “We have got to take care of the basketball better than we did tonight and that cost us the game.”
CBU had just one lead early in the second half against the Griffins, but was still able to cut the deficit to just three points with a little over five minutes to play. The Lancers would get outscored 14-2 over the next three minutes to fall behind 63-49.
Shanice Billington hit a 3-pointer with 1:15 to play, but that was the only field goal the Lancers came up with in the closing minutes, as the two teams traded free throws to end the game.
Michelle Pace led all scorers, pouring in 20 points to lead the way for the home team. The Griffens 80 percent shooting from the free throw line proved to be the difference in the game, with Pace hitting six of her eight foul shots.
Renetha Burton racked up her third straight double-double to start the season for the Lancers. The junior power forward scored 11 points and grabbed 15 rebounds in the loss. Nine of Burton's 15 boards were on the offensive end.
The two teams ended the first half tied at 26-26, but CBU allowed 39 points in the second half to suffer the 11-point loss.
“We just have to learn from our mistakes and look to tomorrow,” said Marcum. “We won the battle of the boards which was good to see.”
CBU out-rebounded the Griffens 45-34.
Brenna Hahn and V.V. Vasciunaite each added 11 points for CBU and Billington scored 10, going 2-for-2 from beyond the arc.
The Lancers continue play at the Westminster tournament Friday, facing Montana Western. CBU will wrap up its three game trip Saturday against Carroll (Mont.).
