SALT LAKE CITY, Utah --- California Baptist University showed no ill effects after suffering its first loss Thursday night, using the long ball to pummel Montana Western Friday and move to 3-1 on the season.
Playing the second game of three in a row at the Westminster Fall Classic, CBU dropped a season-high in points, defeating the Bulldogs 111-73.
Brenna Hahn and V.V. Vasciunaite led the way for the Lancers combining to shoot 11-of-16 from beyond the arc. Hahn scored 29 points, just one shy of her career-high, to lead all scorers. Vasciunaite scored 25 points, adding six rebounds and six assists.
“V.V. really got going early and carried us through the first half and then Brenna turned it on in the second,” said Head Coach John Marcum. “Everyone was taking good shots and making the extra pass, which is why we shot such a high percentage. Any time you shoot almost 60 percent you are going to score a lot of points.”
As a team the Lancers shot 65 percent (13-of-20) from 3-point range and 59.7 percent (40-of-67) from the field.
The two teams played neck and neck for the first eight minutes with the Bulldogs taking a two-point lead at the 12:47 mark. Hahn then hit a three to retake the lead for CBU and off a Montana turnover Shanice Billington got an uncontested layup to put the Lancers up 21-18.
Justine Chacon would hit another three to cap eight straight points for CBU and put the Lancers up for good. CBU would outscore the Bulldogs 31-21 to take a 16-point lead into the half.
CBU was able to improve its turnover ratio and free throw shooting, two areas that plagued the team in Thursday's loss. The Lancers gave the ball away 15 times, while forcing Montana into 29 turnovers and shot 18-of-25 (72 percent) from the line.
“It was a good team win tonight,” said Marcum. “We cleaned up some of the problem areas from last night. Now we have to come out tomorrow and do it again. We had a goal of at least winning two of three here, so tomorrow becomes key.”
