ERROR OF THEIR WAYS

IRVINE, Calif. --- In yesterday's win over Concordia, California Baptist University committed five costly errors but was eventually able to recover in time. Today, it was the Eagles' turn. They didn't recover.
A bizarre series got even more peculiar when three Concordia errors in the eighth led to a four-run inning and an eventual 5-2 win for the Lancers Friday afternoon. The win is the Lancers' third straight as they improve to 14-4 overall, 3-0 GSAC. The Eagles drop to 7-5, 0-3.
In a series where all three games could have gone either way, the Lancers again took advantage late to get a close win. Wednesday, they were overmatched by Eagle ace Bennett Whitmore for more than seven innings, before a three-run eighth led to a 4-3 win. Yesterday, they overcame five errors and used a two-run, walk-off home run by Sharif Othman for an 8-6 win.
John Hill's solo home run with one out in the second off CBU starter Erik Wallace was the only run for either team for six innings.
The Lancers tied it with back-to-back one-out doubles from Jake Johnson and Othman in the seventh.
In the eighth, Matt Johnson led off with a bunt single, and then in the span of two plays, both sacrifice bunts, Concordia committed three errors. Sam Pavlisick misplayed Garret Rau's bunt attempt, and then Edgar Guillen threw wildly past Danny Casey in an attempt to get Johnson at third. Johnson scored the go-ahead run and Rau went to second. Brian Sharp then attempted a sacrifice but the Eagles committed their third error and the Lancers had runners at the corners with nobody out.
After Sharp stole second, Cole Bullard drilled a double down the left field line, and the Lancers took a 4-1 lead. Two batters later, Jake Johnson singled up the middle to make it 5-1.
Jesse Arreola (2-0) went 3.1 innings of relief, giving up just two hits, both in the bottom of the eighth that led to the Eagles' second run, but that was it. He struck out two. Zach Hedges struck out two of the three batters he faced for his third save.
Both Johnsons were 2-for-4 as the Lancers had seven hits.
The fourth and final game (7-inning) of the series is Monday at 2 p.m. in Irvine.
