RIVERSIDE--- The California Baptist University baseball team completed the series sweep of the Seattle U Redhawks on Sunday afternoon, besting their former conference foes 5-1 at Totman Stadium.
The win now makes it seven straight victories for the Lancers, including a perfect 6-0 start at home for CBU, while the Redhawks drop to 0-7 to begin their new run in the West Coast Conference.
The Lancers' offense got off to a better start than the previous two games, as they would get their first run across the plate in the bottom of the second, courtesy of a Ryder Dykstra single that would bring home Matt Chavez. Rhyne Palmer, who got the nod on the mound to start, would keep the Redhawks quiet on offense with just three hits allowed through his five innings of work. Ben Castelli continued his solid series with a single out to left field that would bring home Chris Ramirez as the Lancers went up 2-0 in the early going of the game.
The Lancers' best offensive inning was by far in the fifth, as the Lancers would put three more runs on the board in the frame. Those three runs came courtesy of a home run from Connor Ross, who belted one to deep left field, bringing home both Castelli and Ramirez to make it 5-0 in favor of the home squad. Palmer would strike out another batter in the fifth to conclude his day and earn his first win of the season on the mound.
The Redhawks would score their lone run of the game in the top of the seventh off a Brandon Stinnett single to bring home Jared Stevenson, who was previously walked. The Lancers would mitigate any further damage in the inning with a 5-4-3 double play to end the inning. CBU would get a solid relief appearance from Alfredo Capecete, who would be credited with the save over the final inning as Capecete would strike out three straight Redhawk batters to preserve the victory and the series sweep over Seattle U by a final score of 5-1.
After allowing the Redhawks to score six runs on day one of the series, the Lancers would only allow two total runs over the final three games of the series, with just a grand total of 14 hits between those three matchups. In this game, Ramirez and Chavez would each register two hits while Ross' HR would be the defining play for the Lancer offense in the victory.
The Lancers will host CSUN for a midweek tilt at Totman Stadium on Tuesday, February 24, at 6 PM PT.
