SAN DIEGO, Calif. --- No. 3-ranked California Baptist University used an 11-0 run to keep its record unblemished, winning the first two matches of the Point Loma Nazarene Seaside Invitational to move to 6-0 on the season.
The Lancers defeated Baker (Kan.) 3-1 (18-25, 25-20, 25-22, 25-23) in Friday's opener then swept Hannibal-LaGrange (Mo.) 3-0 (25-17, 25-15, 25-21) in the nightcap.
“The girls were consistent from start to finish tonight,” said Head Coach Ryan McGuyre. “We gave the first game away, but didn't let that affect us. The girls realized it and came out determined to win.”
The undefeated Lancers dropped the first set to Baker 25-18, but finished with a flurry taking the fourth and final set 25-23, ending the match on an 11-0 run.
“I thought Jessica Kalama and Bree Rauschenbach did a great job of taking over the match for us,” said McGuyre. “Jessica was doing it all on the court, both offensively and defensively. Bree had some great serves and really turned things around for us offensively. They were our leaders in both matches today.”
Kalama filled up the stat sheet with the Lancers' first double-double of the young season, ripping 18 kills and recording 24 digs. Both numbers were career highs for the junior opposite hitter. Rauschenbach had 14 kills, three blocks and led the Lancers with five service aces against the Wildcats.
Megan Glennie also proved clutch down the stretch with four kills during the match clinching 11-0 run. Jessica Roberts stopped the Wildcats just two points away from the win in the fourth set with a kill, and the Lancers never looked back. CBU had seven kills during the run.
The two teams had similar attack percentages with CBU hitting .133 and Baker hitting .123, but the Lancers found an edge defensively with 87 digs as opposed to 74 by the Wildcats.
For the Lancers it was their first true test of the season. CBU had gone 4-0 without losing a set before dropping the opening set to Baker.
Rauschenbach and Kalama were again the leaders in the nightcap with 10 and nine kills respectively. Jelena Dragovic also had nine kills for CBU. Rauschenbach hit a blistering .769 on the match and Kalama had 15 digs. As a team the Lancers served 10 aces against the Trojans.
The Trojans put up their best fight of the match in the third and final game battling CBU neck and neck until Kalama fittingly put the match away with a kill.
The Lancers finish up the Seaside Invitational Saturday, facing William Jessup at 11 a.m. and Lindenwood (Mo.) at 5 p.m.
