RIVERSIDE, Calif. --- No. 2 California Baptist University owned the gym Saturday night, defeating GSAC foe San Diego Christian in straight sets for the team's 17th win of the season.
The Lancers are 17-0 overall, and 4-0 in conference play after the 3-0 (25-17, 25-22, 25-17) victory, equaling the best start to a season in program history. The last time CBU began 17-0 was in 1999, when the team finished 28-5. That squad would go on to win the GSAC crown with a 16-2 conference record. It is the longest winning streak during Head Coach Ryan McGuyre's eight seasons at the helm.
San Diego Christian held leads in only the first two sets, gaining the advantage for just seven points throughout the match. Four of those points came early in the first set before CBU settled in to a groove offensively and cruised to victory.
The Hawks grabbed an early 4-3 lead in the first set, and after the advantage changed hands one more time CBU took a 12-11 lead and proceeded to rattle off six straight points to take control. Linjun Ji ripped two big kills off of long volleys to spark the run and force a Hawk timeout.
Bree Rauschenbach hit an even .500 on the night, with five kills and no errors on 10 attempts. Jessica Kalama had nine kills for the Lancers, hitting .438 and recording 11 digs, while Jelena Dragovic was just behind with a .417 attack percentage and six kills. Ingrid Carmona was the only Lancer with double-digit kills, hitting 11 in the match. Katie Lockard recorded 13 digs.
San Diego Christian would go ahead two more times in the second set, before the Lancers closed out the match with an emphatic wire-to-wire victory in the third. The closest the Hawks got in the third set was an early 2-1 deficit, from there the Lancers pulled away to take it 25-17.
Rauschenbach closed out the closest set of the match with two aces in the second. The junior middle blocker now has 40 service aces on the season, hitting 0.70 aces per set. The Lancers' single-season record for aces is 88 set by Margaret Iereneo back in 1989. Iereneo also set the record for aces per set that season with a 0.88 average. Rauschenbach has recorded multiple aces in ten of the Lancers' 17 matches, five of which she has recorded five or more aces.
With the loss San Diego Christian falls to 8-5, 1-3 on the season.
The Lancers welcome another conference opponent Tuesday, when Vanguard comes to the Van Dyne Gymnasium.
