FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. --- After shooting a 322 in the opening round of the Mountain Shootout hosted by Northern Arizona, California Baptist University will be looking for a fresh start in its second round on Tuesday.
That fresh start could very well be sparked by a freshman playing in her first ever collegiate golf tournament.
First year golfer Kirsten Keyser paced the Lancers on Monday, showing no sign of freshman jitters as she shot a 78 at Forrest Highlands Golf Course. Keyser currently sits in a tie for 10th place.
“Overall our scores could have been much better today, but Kirsten playing the way she did definitely was a bright spot,” said Head Coach Lane Pace, who begins his fifth year at the helm for the Lancers. “This is a tough golf course and two or three bad shots can really throw you off, so we have to stay focused.”
Finishing just a shot behind Keyser was senior Adriana Niclotti with a 79. Samantha Katz shot an 82 and reigning NAIA Individual National Champion Nathalie Silva shot 83. Sara Koizumi finished with a 92.
“I think the fact that Kirsten just got done playing in the final group at Pebble Beach helped,” said Pace, referring to the fact that Keyser played in the PGA Champions Tour Home Care & Hospice First Tee Open two weeks ago, in a group with Mark Calcavecchia and finishing 12th. “The first tournament is one where there are a lot of nerves and as a team we didn't necessarily handle those well. We just need to go out and shoot what we know we are capable of tomorrow and hopefully build on that for next week.”
CBU had just four rounds of 322 or higher in 23 rounds played last season.
The Lancers finished the day in fourth place, trailing the leader Southern Utah (305) by 17 strokes. Host Northern Arizona and Grand Canyon are currently tied at 310. Utah Valley sits in fifth with a 349 and Cal State Bakersfield is sixth with a 362.
There is a shotgun start scheduled for tomorrow's final round at 10 a.m.
