MUDDY WIN

RIVERSIDE, Calif. --- There's something about Claremont-Mudd that brings the best out of Osvaldo Bastida.
Two years ago as a freshman, Bastida scored twice in a 2-1 win at Claremont. Today, he scored in the 17th minute to lift California Baptist University to a 3-0 shutout of the Stags.
It was Bastida's third career goal against the Stags and third goal this season. With three goals and four assists, he is off to the best start of his career, and the Lancers are off to one of their best starts ever as well.
"Ozzie is doing what we know he is capable of doing," said CBU Head Coach Ryan Jorden. "We have players who can get him the ball and put him in position to be successful, and he's taking advantage of that and is having a great start this year."
The win is the Lancers' second straight as they improve to 4-1. It is their best start since 2001 when they started 10-1. It is also their second shutout of the year.
The Lancers out-shot the Stags, 21-8, including a 14-2 margin in the first half. Frederick Doar did his best to keep the Lancers off the board with six saves, but he allowed Bastida's strike in the 17th and then Tim Wardell made it 2-0 just 49 seconds away from halftime.
Bastida's build up was one that has become common place for the Lancers so far. He collected the ball right in the center circle and played it directly to the left side to Jonathan Garcia, who was wide open. Garcia carried the ball down the sideline, and Bastida went with him stride-for-stride. Garcia played it through to Bastida, who easily beat Doar for what was his team-leading third goal of the year.
Not to be outdone, though, Wardell put in his third goal of
the year with a nice individual effort in the box. As the senior got around a
defender in the area, Doar charged. Wardell pushed the ball around the keeper
and then slammed it into the open net.
The Stags didn't wilt and picked up the pressure in the second half, getting
six of their eight shots in the second 45 minutes. Jeff Redinger needed to make
only one save, though, before being lifted for Dan Kelly in the 87th
minute.
Just four minutes prior to that though, the Lancers slammed the door shut.
Heitor Santarem bent a free kick from just outside the area on the left side
and curled it just inside the far post for his first career goal.
"We continue to be solid at the back, but we still want to keep improving,"
said Jorden. "We're also creating loads of chances, but we want to continue to be
more fluid in the attack. I'm proud of the effort, especially on a hot day like
today against a pretty good team."
