RIVERSIDE, Calif. --- It took coming within a set of dropping its first match of the year to wake No. 3 California Baptist University up, but the Lancers finally did answer the challenge defeating Westmont 3-2 (25-27, 25-20, 23-25, 25-14, 15-6).
Led by veterans Jessica Kalama and Ingrid Carmona the Lancers kicked it in to high gear in the fourth and fifth set, outscoring the Warriors 40-20 to take the first GSAC match of the year.
“It just felt like we were not emotionally or mentally ready in the first three sets,” said CBU Head Coach Ryan McGuyre. “It can be tough to find your rhythm when you get out of sync, but we were able to do that and win this one. Kalama and Carmona really carried us down the stretch and we needed that.”
Both sets lost by the Lancers were by just two points. The first was a marathon 27-25 Westmont victory and the third set the Warriors took 25-23. In each set CBU was able to stall its opponent at game point before allowing Westmont to put it away with kills. The Lancers committed five errors in both the first and third set, which was more than the team had in the other three sets combined.
Feeling the pressure, CBU wasted no time in the fourth set jumping out to a 9-3 lead. The Lancers used an early eight point run to build the lead and closed strong never allowing the Warriors to get any closer than six points the rest of the way. Kalama had four big kills during the run to set the tone for the home team. The fifth set was more of the same as the Lancers took a 6-2 lead and never looked back. Fittingly the final kill of the night came from the powerful arm of Carmona after a long volley between the two teams.
Carmona led the way with 25 kills on the night (.317) and Kalama was not far behind, filling up the stat sheet with 21 kills (.333) and 22 digs. Carmona also had 18 digs. For Kalama it was her fourth double-double of the season. The junior opposite hitter leads the team with 121 kills on the year and is second with 134 digs.
“Jessica has been doing this for us all year,” said McGuyre. “She does so many little things well for us out there. She has definitely been our MVP up to this point.”
As a team CBU used a season high 16 blocks to help stave off defeat Tuesday night. The mark ties the fourth highest block total in program history.
The Lancers Improve their record to 13-0 overall and 1-0 in the GSAC while the Warriors fall to 6-3 and 0-1.
“This just reminds us we have to take every conference opponent seriously,” said McGuyre. “Our conference is too good for us not to give maximum effort every match and expect to win. Hopefully they realize that and will be dialed in from here on out.”
CBU is back in action Thursday night as another GSAC foe, Azusa Pacific, comes to town. Start time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
