EL CAJON, Calif. --- A day after garnering its highest ranking in program history, No. 6 California Baptist University took care of business in San Diego, defeating San Diego Christian 73-63, Tuesday night.
CBU had four players score in double figures and used a 58.1 percent shooting clip in the second half to put away the Hawks.
It was a slow start for the Lancers who were outshot in the first half as the two teams played to a 34-34 tie.
CBU went on a 16-4 run late in the second half to build an insurmountable 14-point lead with 3:27 left to play. V.V. Vasciunaite hit a 3-pointer to push the lead to double-digits and Renetha Burton capped the run with three straight baskets.
Vasciunaite led all scorers with 17 points and Burton added 16 in just 18 minutes of playing time, going 8-for-10 from the field. S.J. Simmons had 12 points and Dana Olsen chipped in 11.
After shooting 42.9 percent in the opening period, the Lancers hot shooting second half gave the team a 50.8 percent shooting night.
It was turnovers that plagued CBU most of the night and kept the Hawks in the game. The Lancers committed 26 turnovers in the game and SDCU scored 16 points off of CBU giveaways in the first half.
The Hawks were led by Jasmin Thomas with 15 points and Brittany Robinson with 14 points. Robinson led all players with 40 minutes played on the night.
SDCU committed 21 turnovers of their own and the Lancers scored 11 of their 39 points in the second half off of turnovers.
The win, coupled with a 77-64 loss for The Master's to Westmont Tuesday night, gives CBU first place alone atop the conference standings for the first time this season. CBU moves to 13-4 overall and 6-1 in the GSAC. The Lancers have several teams hot on their heals, however, with three teams including The Master's sitting at 5-2 in the conference.
CBU comes home to face The Master's Saturday night and then will host Concordia Tuesday. Concordia is one of two teams currently at 4-2 in the GSAC.
