RIVERSIDE, Calif. --- Good things came in threes for No. 6 California Baptist University on Tuesday night.
It took heroic efforts from three separate players, a last second 3-pointer in regulation and a trio of big 3-point shots in the extra period to defeat Concordia 91-79.
The Lancers trailed by as much as 10 points in the second half, but clawed their way back in the game and got a 3-pointer from S.J. Simmons with 3.2 seconds left to force overtime.
“We are definitely learning that we can handle adversity,” said Head Coach John Marcum. “We got down in that second half, but didn't get discouraged.”
Renetha Burton led the charge in the second half, getting 10 of her 17 points late, grabbing a couple of key offensive rebounds and hitting four free throws down the stretch.
With less than two minutes to play, Burton stole the ball near mid court and after a missed layup grabbed an offensive rebound and drew a foul. Burton hit one of two free throws to tie the game at 63-63.
On the following possession Burton grabbed a defensive rebound and drew another foul. She again made one free throw to put CBU up, 64-63.
Four straight free throws, however, by the Eagles put the visitors up 67-64.
After the second pair of fouls shots, the Lancers got the ball back with 19.1 seconds left. Needing a 3-pointer the Lancers passed the ball around the perimeter trying to find an open shot. Simmons let a three fly with seven seconds left that fell woefully short, but V.V. Vasciunaite grabbed an offensive rebound and got the ball back to Simmons, who did not miss this time. Her corner three hit nothing but net leaving just 3.2 seconds left on the clock with which the Eagles were unable to score.
In the extra period it was the Brenna Hahn show as the senior guard knocked down three 3-pointers.
Hahn hit 3-pointers on back-to-back possessions for the Lancers giving the home team a 74-70 lead. Hahn's final three broke the game open for CBU, putting the Lancers up 79-72. Hahn scored 11 of her 19 points in the overtime period after going scoreless in the second half.
As a team the Lancers dropped 24 points in the final five minutes.
“Sometimes it's better to be lucky than good,” said Marcum “We got a three on a broken play with a couple seconds left. This game is more about players than it is plays. We had a lot of girls step up big tonight. I think Shanice Billington's defensive performance in the second half and Dana Olsen's free throw shooting were also key for us.”
Olsen led the Lancers with 22 points on the night, hitting 10-of-12 free throws. Simmons scored 20 points for the Lancers and Burton dropped 17 points and grabbed 14 rebounds. Seven of Burton's rebounds were on the offensive end.
It was the Lancers' fourth close win in their past five games, as CBU barely held on to defeat The Master's in their last outing and had miracle wins over No. 12 Vanguard and No. 8 Azusa Pacific two weeks ago. CBU's victory over Vanguard also featured a last second three by Simmons to force overtime.
The Lancers move to 15-4 overall, 8-1 GSAC with the win and the Eagles fall to 9-5, 4-4. CBU travels to Fresno Pacific this Saturday.
