SEAL LION SLAUGHTER

RIVERSIDE, Calif. --- Coming into the game it was a question of whether No. 5 California Baptist University could avenge its only conference loss of the season to Point Loma Nazarene.
By the start of the second half it wasn't so much a question of if, but rather by how much.
CBU defeated the Sea Lions 77-57, to move to 17-4 overall, 10-1 GSAC, rattling off its 10th-straight conference victory since PLNU handed the Lancers an 82-80 overtime loss on Nov. 30.
“This wasn't necessarily a statement win,” said Head Coach John Marcum. “These are ones we expect to win at home, so it was nice to see the girls come out and take care of business like that.”
CBU sprinted out to a 9-0 lead in the first 1:30 of play and never looked back, taking a 47-19 lead into the half.
CBU used a 22-6 points in the paint advantage and 4-of-4 shooting from behind the arc by Brenna Hahn to build the first half lead. The home team's smothering full court press led to just 25 percent shooting for PLNU in the opening period.
The Lancers got significant minutes for several players off the bench, with 10 players seeing playing time in the game and nine of them playing at least nine minutes.
“We got up early and were able to play a lot of people tonight and get some people rested for Biola on Saturday,” said Marcum. “We didn't let off the gas and maintained our effort defensively which was key. Earlier in the season we got up big and then let them back in the game late.”
Dana Olsen led the Lancers in scoring on the night, shooting 10-of-14 from the field and Hahn finished her night 5-of-5 from 3-point territory with 22 points.
CBU held a distinct advantage in the paint all night, out-rebounding the Sea Lions 49-27. The Lancers finished with 36 points in the paint to just 18 for PLNU. Nineteen of CBU's boards were on the offensive end, giving the team 22 second chance points. Renetha Burton led the Lancers with 11 rebounds, six on the offensive end.
The Sea Lions had three players in double figures and were led by Abby Boorman with 13 points. PLNU shot just 34 percent for the game as they fall to 9-9 on the season, 4-6 GSAC.
With the win CBU broke a 12-game losing streak to the Sea Lions, dating back to 2005. It had been the longest such streak for the team versus any current opponent.
The Lancers look to continue their hot streak on the road Saturday at No. 6 Biola. That game can be heard on KPRO-1570 AM, tape delayed following the men's game at 7:30 p.m.
