HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif. --- Though probably too close for comfort, California Baptist University demonstrated their grit in a pair of one-goal victories Saturday in the final day at the Concordia Tournament.
To beat Iona 11-10 in the final thirty seconds of the game, new record-holder Peter Hines scored on a 6-on-5 advantage provoked by a drawn ejection from Trevor Rowland.
Rowland also had a hand in at least five goals, scoring two himself and contributing with three assists.
"Trevor [Rowland] had his best game ever," Head Coach Rick Rowland said. "He drew the final ejection, made the assist on the 6-on-5 to Hines for the win and opened up the game with two goals as well. He was our MVP."
Despite pulling out the win on a 6-on-5 goal, the Lancers were only successful on one other advantage attack in six opportunities, but the final stretch of play proved enough for CBU, after tied scores of two, four and seven after each respective quarter.
"We played a strong final two and half minutes and never quit, even when down by two," Rowland said. "We pressed hard and came up with some big turnovers to get up the pool quickly and get back in the game."
Scott Butler and Scott Gleason each tallied two goals. Gleason also added two assists and, on the defensive end, drew three ejections and tallied three steals.
Jeremy Atkinson, Cody Wetherbee, Cameron Custance and Chris Toy each notched a goal while Brent Troutman proved to be a big piece of the Lancer defense with four steals.
In yet another nail-biter, CBU surpassed Vanguard 14-13 in the two teams' second of three matches this season.
With the Lancers up two goals late in the third quarter, the Lions scored with a final second shot to cut the lead to just one heading into the final eight minutes.
Setting the pace early, however, Hines found the back of the net once and drew three ejections while Wetherbee scored the hat-trick all before the end of three quarters.
To propel CBU late, Gleason scored two of his three goals in the fourth quarter for another clutch performance.
For the day's top scorer, Toy also added another four goals alone against Vanguard pushing his current season total to 38 goals.
Butler, Atkinson and Troutman also each tallied a goal.
Goalkeeper Austen Ramer had six steals, one save and two assists.
The Lancers beat the Lions 12-8 on Oct. 1 and will meet again on Nov. 11 in Costa Mesa.
Starting Thursday, Oct. 20, CBU heads out on a three-day, four game road trip with a stop in Fresno to face Fresno Pacific before two days in the Santa Clara Tournament.
Heading into the final four weeks of the regular season, the Lancers currently hold a record of 17-5.
