CBU Opens Up Home Schedule 2-0 with Wins over BIOLA and Redlands

RIVERSIDE--- The California Baptist University men's water polo team got its home schedule started on Thursday as they hosted Redlands and Biola for a pair of non-conference matches in Riverside.

CBU would come away 2-0 on the day with convincing scorelines to bring their early-season record to 9-1.

G1 vs REDLANDS:

The Lancers got to work right away on the visiting Bulldogs as they would hang two quick goals out of the gate courtesy of Andrea Nuzzo and Rafa Martinez. Redlands would battle back and keep the game close with three goals over the next four minutes, with the Lancers' overly physical play the cause of the run. Two more goals early in the second period would somewhat distance the Lancers from Redlands, and they would cling to a 7-4 lead at the break.

The Lancers continued to distance themselves in the second half as they would answer every Redlands goal with two of their own, leading to a 15-8 final result at the Lancer Aquatics Center. Micah Grantham led the Lancers in points with four, contributing two goals and two assists in a backup role. Phil Portisch, Whitley Beamon, and Martinez would all net multiple goals in the victory. Tanner McCreary was solid in his one half of action with 11 saves in 16 minutes between the posts.

G2 vs BIOLA:

In the evening match of the day for the Lancers, they would bring the intensity early with four goals before Biola could blink. The Eagles would get on the board with 3:42 to play, but would instantly find themselves down 6-2 after eight minutes of action. CBU would completely dominate the second period with a 6-1 margin on the scoresheet as they would continue to press on the gas on the offensive end of the pool.

The Eagles would string together some solid play to end the third period and begin the fourth, scoring six of seven goals in that frame to cut the lead to seven. CBU would put the finishing touches on the Eagles at 17-9 and claim the 2-0 day at the Lancer Aquatics Center. Rafa Martinez and Wyatt Bugbee would each post hat tricks in the match, while Aidan Olson would net a pair of goals to aid the Lancers to victory.

NEXT: The Lancers will hit the road to NorCal next week as they compete in the MPSF Invitational beginning on Friday, September 18, in Palo Alto, CA.
