PHOENIX, Ariz. --- Osvaldo Bastida scored in the 36th minute, and California Baptist University killed off the final 54 minutes to snap a two-game losing skid with a 1-0 non-conference win over Western Washington Saturday on the final day of the Grand Canyon Tournament.
The win improves the Lancers to 7-4 overall and gets them back on the winning track as they get set to head for a four-game road trip to Hawaii at the end of next week.
The Vikings fall to 4-6.
"It's great to get a result, because the last couple of games we created enough chances to win but didn't win them," said CBU Head Coach Ryan Jorden. "Tonight, we took the chance we needed and were able to play from the front, which changes the game for us. From there, we were more intelligent in managing the game. Hopefully, this gets us on a roll going into a difficult trip to Hawaii."
The Lancers, who were shutout for the first time this year in Thursday's 1-0 loss to Seattle Pacific, finally broke through late in the first half. They actually scored in the 21st minute, but it was waved off because of an offside call.
Fifteen minutes later, though, Bastida found the back of the net, and this time it counted.
Michael Salazar, who entered as substitute just 11 minutes earlier, played a ball out to the right side to Jonathan Fausto, who crossed a perfect ball back into the area. After he played the ball out, Salazar ran into the box, took Fausto's service and kneed it off a Viking defender and to Bastida, who slid the ball past Viking keeper Keegan Rogers.
It was Bastida's fourth strike this year and 19th career goal, moving him into eighth place on the Lancers' career list, just two away from eighth. He also moved into eighth place with 55 career points.
The Lancers out-shot the Vikings, 10-8, impressively allowing just two shots in the second half while the Vikings were chasing a goal and looking to equalize.
One of those shots was taken from about 30 yards out and missed by about 20 yards. The second one came with 12 seconds left when a Viking corner kick was headed just wide of the far post.
"It would have been easier to kill the final hour if we would have taken the chances we got offensively," said Jorden. "But, we want to limit the number of possessions the opposition has and control the ball, and we did that in spurts tonight. It's hard to do when you play two games in 48 hours on a big surface, but the guys gave a great effort tonight, grinded through some things and were able to put the game away."
Joey Pacheco needed to make just two saves for his third shutout of the season.
Though there were only 23 total fouls called, there were seven cautions issued, five of them to the Vikings.
