PRIMM, Nev. --- California Baptist University will host its second annual Spring Break Collegiate and two of the strongest fields in the NAIA will tee it up tomorrow at the Primm Valley Golf Club.
“We are very excited to host these great teams and look forward to some high quality play over the next few days,” said CBU Head Coach Lane Pace.
The CBU men, who just broke into the NAIA rankings at No. 25 for the first time this season, host a field of 15 teams, nine of which are ranked.
No. 2 Oklahoma City, tops the list of ranked teams in the men's field and enters the tournament as the defending NAIA Champion. Also in the Top 10 is tournament participant No. 7 Southern Nazarene.
The men's field features seven teams from last season's NAIA National Tournament. Along with Oklahoma City, Southern Nazarene and CBU, No. 11 Holy Names, No. 14 Victoria, No. 17 Wayland Baptist and No. 19 Savannah College of Arts and Design all made the 2010 NAIA tournament.
The top-ranked Lancer Women host a field equally as strong, including No. 8-ranked and defending NAIA Champion British Columbia, along with five other ranked teams.
The 12-team field includes four Top 10 teams including CBU and UBC, as well as No. 3 Oklahoma City and No. 6 Victoria. Six of the 12 teams qualified for the 2010 NAIA National Tournament.
“Other than the national tournament I don't think there is a tougher field this season on either the men's or the women's side,” said Pace. “This is a great test for not only our players but all involved heading toward the postseason.”
Play tees off Monday morning, with the women playing 18-holes each day and the men playing 36 on Monday and 18 on Tuesday.
The Lancer Women have held the No. 1 ranking in both polls this season and are currently riding a three-tournament winning streak. The men just moved into the rankings this week after a strong showing at the Smee Builders Intercollegiate and are looking to make a late season charge toward another NAIA Tournament appearance.
