RIVERSIDE, Calif. --- After qualifying last month for its fifth-straight NAIA National Championship, No. 2 California Baptist University received the first and second round championship pairings Friday.
The Lancers, who moved up one spot in the final poll of the season, are paired with No. 10 Lubbock Christian (Texas) and No. 21 Northwood (Texas) for the first two rounds of the tournament.
“We really got an ideal draw on the times we play in both rounds,” said Head Coach Lane Pace. “Our first round morning tee time is not too early then we get a good amount of time to rest before our second round. It worked out well and hopefully we can take advantage of that.”
The Lancers tee off on the first hole day one, with their first group going out at 8:50 a.m. and last group teeing off at 9:30 a.m. CBU then tees off in the afternoon wave in round two, starting on hole 10 at 1 p.m., with the final group teeing off at 1:40 p.m.
Action begins May 17 at 8 a.m. with No. 1 Shorter headlining the first group. The 129-player field for the National Championships is comprised of 17 automatic qualifying teams from conferences/independents/unaffiliated group tournaments and eight at-large selections, were determined using the final NAIA Women's Golf Coaches' Top 25 Poll released on Thursday. Four individuals earned a spot in the event as the medalist at their respective conference/independent/unaffiliated group tournament.
“Our goal is to win every tournament we compete in,” said Pace. “I believe we have the talent and focus to do just that, so we'll see what happens. Anything can happen in this game, but as long as the girls play up to their capabilities I will be pleased and I think we can be in a good position to compete for a title.”
The Lancers look to improve upon two-straight Top 5 finishes over the last two seasons. CBU spent two polls ranked No. 1 in the NAIA and have won four tournaments this season, including the NAIA Unaffiliated Qualifier last month.
2010 Individual National Champion Nathalie Silva looks to defend her title as CBU seeks its first ever NAIA National Championship.
“This season has been amazing so far,” said Pace. “The girls have worked extremely hard and that, combined with great support from our administration, has made it a memorable run so far. Now it's time to finish things off strong.”
