DENVER, Colo. --- It was a forgettable second day for California Baptist University at the Colorado Premiere Challenge, as the team dropped a pair of three-set matches.
After splitting their Friday matches with an impressive bounce back sweep of No. 16 Seattle Pacific, CBU came out flat Saturday, falling 3-0 (25-17, 25-17, 25-9) to No. 1 Concordia St. Paul and 3-0 (25-20, 25-20, 25-20) to host No. 9 Metro State.
It was evident why CUSP is the defending four-time NCAA Division II Champion in the opener.
The Golden Bears were dominant early posting 17 kills and a .483 hitting percentage in the first set. The Lancers hit progressively worse as the match wore on, finishing with a .062 attack percentage and a total of 20 errors and 26 kills.
CUSP finished the match off with its most dominating performance, jumping out to a 9-2 lead early in the third game. The Lancers were unable to mount a comeback as the Golden Bears cruised to the win.
The Golden Bears out-blocked CBU 8-5 and had nine service aces to just two for the Lancers. Ingrid Carmona led the Lancers offensively with 12 kills, but also had 12 errors. No other Lancer posted more than four kills. CUSP's Megan Carlson had 12 kills and Cassie Haag notched 11.
Things didn't get any easier in the nightcap with another Top 10 opponent waiting.
CBU kept the match closer in each set, but didn't have the offense to score a win, losing all three games 25-20.
MSC out-hit the Lancers .267-.195, committing four less errors and scoring two more blocks.
Carmona led all players with 18 kills and was the only Lancer in double-digits on the night. The Roadrunners got double-digit kill matches from Bri Morley (13) and Emily Greenhalgh (11). MSC's Ngoc Phan had a match-high 17 digs and CBU's Andrea Csaszi had 11.
Carmona earned all-tournament honors for her performance over the last four matches. The junior posted 61 kills (4.36 per set) and 36 digs.
CBU falls to 5-3 on the year with the pair of losses. The Lancers are back in action next Wednesday at 7 p.m. for their home opener against Cal State L.A.
