RIVERSIDE, Calif. --- Michael Salazar scored twice, and Jonathan Garcia had two assists to lead California Baptist University to an impressive Pacific West Conference debut with a 3-0 win over Academy of Art Saturday afternoon.
The win is the Lancers third straight as they improve to 3-2 overall, 1-0 PacWest. The Urban Knights fall to 1-4, 0-1.
The Lancers out-shot the Urban Knights, 19-4, including a 12-3 advantage in the first half in which the Lancers built up a 2-0 advantage.
Salazar, who scored in his season debut Tuesday, scored in the 24th minute to give the Lancers an early lead. Tyler Garrison played Salazar a ball down the left side, and the freshman striker touched it into the box and beat Jacob Baumann to the far post.
Then just 32 seconds away from halftime, Marc Hope cleaned up a cross from Garcia to make it 2-0. Garcia's from the right side sailed over Baumann's arms and to the feet of Hope who was charging into the far post and redirected it into the goal. It was Hope's first goal of the year.
"We wanted to get off to a good start and see where we line up in this conference," said CBU Head Coach Ryan Jorden. "This was step number one. This group has an appetite to get better, and they want to show well and make a run at winning the conference."
Salazar completed the scoring in the 64th minute with his third goal in two games, scoring from another Garcia cross from the right side.
The Urban Knights were only able to get one shot off in the second half, and it didn't come until the final seconds and was right at Joey Pacheco, who corralled it for his only save of the afternoon.
Three of the Lancers' four shots on goal went into the net.
"The guys came out and handled things professionally and the work rate was good," said Jorden. "The guys did a good job solving problems. It's still not a complete performance, and we have things we can grow in."
It is the Lancers' second straight shutout.
CBU hosts NCAA Division II No. 19-ranked Notre Dame de Namur Tuesday at 3 p.m.
